How a color outside what the output device can show is brought into what it can, as PDF names its rendering intents. Most content is RelativeColorimetric, PDF's default.

AbsoluteColorimetric = 0

Keeps colors exact, even the white of the original's paper, and clips the rest, as for proofs.

RelativeColorimetric = 1

Keeps colors exact after matching the original's white to the output's paper, and clips the rest. PDF's default.

Saturation = 2

Keeps colors vivid rather than exact, as for charts.

Perceptual = 3

Shifts all colors to keep how they look together, as for photographs.
