A field: its code, such as "PAGE" or "TOC \o "1-3"", and its result, the text Word last showed for it. The result is also part of the paragraph's text, unless the field is nested in another field's code; then the outer code shows the field's own code in braces instead.

Code

The field's code with each stretch of white space made one space and the ends trimmed. A field nested in it shows as its own code in braces, so { IF { PAGE } = 1 ... } reads "IF {PAGE} = 1 ...".
